The Central African Republic is emerging from a long history of slave raiding and trading, French concessionary colonialism, and authoritarian political rule. In December 2012, tensions escalated into civil war characterized by sexual and gender-based violence and near-genocidal fighting. Despite the signing of a peace agreement in 2019, there are still violent conflicts between different armed groups in the country, and over half the population need humanitarian assistance.

The UN and other actors have been supporting and engaging in peace efforts in the Central African Republic. The UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) was authorized to deploy in September 2014, while the EU and other donors are working on humanitarian assistance. The African Union and regional economic communities have been heavily involved in peace initiatives in the Central African Republic, amongst others, the African Union Observer Mission to the Central African Republic (MOUACA) which is responsible for implementing the national peace process, and the EU training mission in CAR (EUTM-RCA). On this page, you will find the 2020 EPON study of MINUSCA, and other related EPON partner studies on peacebuilding and stabilization initiatives in the Central African Republic.
